500 days since sentencing of Ranjan Ramanayake. 27th May 2022 marked 500 days since former Minister Ranjan Ramanayake was sentenced to Rigorous Imprisonment for Contempt of Court.

Sadda Vidda Rajapakse Palanga Pathira Ambakumarage Ranjan Leo Sylvester Alphonsu, popularly known as Ranjan Ramanayake, is renown for his career as an actor. With a career spanning over 75 movies and the winner of a few awards, including ‘Best Actor’, Ranjan Ramanayake entered politics in 2008. He contested under the United National Party and was elected to Parliament in 2010.

There are many controversies and allegations surrounding the former Minister of Parliament who was in prison from 4th to 5th January 2020.

On 12th January 2021, he was sentenced to four years of Rigorous Imprisonment for his comments on the corruption of the judiciary.

He was produced before the Negombo Court on 27th May 2022, in relation to a defamation case filed against him by former State Minister Nimal Lanza. The case has now been postponed.
