Shashi Weerawansa files appeal against the Colombo Magistrate’s Court’s decision
Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, has filed an appeal against the Colombo Magistrate’s Court’s decision to imprison her.
Shashi Weerawansa’s appeal, which she filed through her lawyers, will be heard on Monday, May 30, 2022.
Shashi Weerawansa was sentenced to two years in prison earlier today for using forged documents to obtain a passport.
When the case came up for hearing today, the Colombo Magistrate’s Court imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 on Shashi Weerawansa.
The court also stated that if Shashi Weerawansa fails to pay the fine, his prison sentence will be extended by another six months.
The court also ordered that a copy of the verdict be given to the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, who will take action against state officials who assisted Shashi Weerawansa in obtaining the passport.
Weerawansa is accused of obtaining two passports fraudulently, one of which was a diplomatic passport, by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
Weerawansa was arrested in February 2015 and later released on bail after submitting documents with forged names and dates of birth to obtain the passports.
Shashi Weerawansa was then served with a warrant by the Colombo Chief Magistrate.
Shashi Weerawansa will be held in remand custody until her appeal is heard on May 30th.
