Mahela Jayawardena has slammed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s use of cricket in Parliament yesterday.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe used the example of famous English cricketer William Gilbert Grace to emphasize the importance of the powers granted to the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament.
During a match, WG Grace was bowled out and the stumps fell onto the ground. The cricketer had picked up the stumps and replaced them. The umpire then told him, “No, no, you are out.”
However, WG Grace responded by saying, “No you fool, they came to see me bat and not to see you umpire.” Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe then said, “
After relaying the story due to disagreements over Minister Prasanna Ranatunga’s recent sentencing, the Prime Minister stated that the Speaker has the authority to make certain decisions.
However, responding to the Prime Minister, Sri Lankan cricket legend Mahela Jayawardena said, “Just to remind you that you are not WG Grace.”
“Not sure if the Sri Lankan public wants to see you or the other failed batsman bat again,” he added.
