Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, the minister of justice, has demanded a report on the mass breakout of prisoners from the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in Polonnaruwa.
Authorities have finally taken control of the tense situation that developed at the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Polonnaruwa.
653 prisoners turned themselves into the police, according to Major General Darshana Hetitiarachi, the commissioner-general of rehabilitation.
After one of the 997 prisoners of the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Center passed away, unrest broke out.
Around 450 prisoners had left the facility.
An inmate who had been brought to the facility a month earlier reportedly argued with a counselor there over having tobacco in his hands.
Later, this argument turned into a full-fledged brawl.
The deceased prisoner was a Mutual inhabitant who was 36 years old.
The body was taken to the Polonnaruwa General Hospital mortuary after the post-mortem examination.
The Maithri Sevana Holiday Resort was the new home for the prisoners who were detained after turning themselves into the police.
Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, the minister of justice, has ordered officials to give him a report on yesterday’s incident at the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Center.
After reviewing the report, the justice minister announced that a five-person committee would be formed to look into the incident.
