According to Dr. Samadhi Rajapksa, the Chairman of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol, six persons in Sri Lanka develop a heroin addiction every day.
According to a recent poll, close to 120,000 persons in Sri Lanka are hooked to heroin, he claimed in an interview with News 1st, despite a noticeable reduction in smoking rates among the general public.
Dr. Rajapksa claims that compared to last year, there has been a 6% decrease in the prevalence of smoking among the general population.
Additionally, the rate of tobacco leaf use, which was 15% in 2019, has fallen to 13% today. He continued, “However, there has only been a very minor reduction in the rate of consumption and manufacture of drugs.”
Dr. Rajapaksa noted that what is more concerning is the rising rate of cannabis and other harmful drug use, like as heroin.
