The Court of Appeal has ordered MP Johnston Fernando to surrender before 8 p.m. today (June 09), as a warrant for his arrest has been issued.
The directive came after the court considered a writ application filed by the former minister to prevent his arrest.
Meanwhile, the Appeals Court directed the Criminal Investigation Department not to carry out the arrest warrant issued by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court until 8 p.m. today.
On Wednesday (June 8), Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage issued a warrant for Fernando’s arrest.
The Appeals Court, however, has directed the magistrate not to issue an order against the parliamentarian until the writ application is resolved.
The parliamentarian was named as a suspect in the case filed over the May 9 incidents of violence in Galle Face and Kollupitiya on the Attorney General’s orders.
The CID is investigating the attacks on protesters at ‘GotaGoGama’ at Galle Face Green and ‘MainaGoGama’ near Temple Trees by a group of SLPP supporters.
When the case was heard on Wednesday, Additional Solicitor General Ayesha Jinasena, who was seeking a warrant for the parliamentarian’s arrest, told the court that the accused was fleeing the investigating officers.
