UAE offers assistance to make prisoner exchange possible between Russia, Ukraine

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has offered its assistance to Russia and Ukraine in order to facilitate a prisoner exchange, according to Russian news agency RIA Novosti, citing sources.

According to RIA Novosti, both countries are considering the UAE’s proposal as they finalize the lists of prisoners who may be swapped. Since the invasion began on February 24, both Russia and Ukraine have claimed to have captured hundreds of prisoners of war (POWs). Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced in the first week of June that Russian forces had captured over 6,500 Ukrainian fighters.

The Ukrainian government also stated earlier this month that 11 rounds of prisoner swaps have taken place since the war began. Several prisoners have been swapped during these rounds. Each country has accused the other of committing war crimes and atrocities against civilians and POWs.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky told the G7 that “now is not the time for negotiations” with Russia. According to reports, Ukraine’s president also asked the G7 nations to “limit the price of Russian oil” and “intensify sanctions” against Russia for its invasion of his country.
