The police shot and killed a 37-year-old man who had apparently stabbed a police officer.
The incident happened in the Pitigala police division, where the suspect stabbed a police officer who had gone to look into a complaint.
In a statement, the police said that a team led by the officer in charge of the Pitigala police station went to the scene to investigate and help the hurt officer.
The person who stabbed the police officer had tried to attack the police team with a sharp weapon and throw something that looked like a hand grenade at them, according to the police. Because of this incident, another police officer had been cut.
The police also said that after this, they shot at the suspect to stop more people from getting hurt and for self-defense.
The two police officers and the injured suspect were all taken to the Elpitiya Base Hospital. Later, the suspect was taken to the Karapitiya teaching hospital, but he died there from his wounds.
The ASP in charge of Ambalangoda District 1 is still looking into what happened.
