Advice from the JVP. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna asserted that today Parliament has the authority to elect a new President in accordance with the Constitution and that it was illogical to continue waiting for the President’s resignation given that he had left the country while ignoring his duties.
According to JVP MP Vijitha Herath, if the President left the country without resigning formally, it may be assumed that he had given up his position.
He claimed that a similar incident occurred when Tunisian President Ben Ali left the country without formally resigning.
According to MP Herath, under the parameters of Article 38(2) of the Constitution, the Speaker and Chief Justice may decide to hold parliamentary elections to choose a new President.
He claimed that in order to stabilize and restore normalcy to the nation, both the president and the prime minister should resign.
