In a strong statement on Friday (22), the Council of the European Union said that the EU expects the new government of Sri Lanka to follow all of its GSP+ commitments.

After President Rajapaksa’s resignation, Sri Lanka’s Parliament moved quickly to choose Ranil Wickremesinghe as the new President of the country. In response, the EU emphasized the need to protect Sri Lankan citizens’ freedom of speech and expression, as well as their individual rights, so that the country can make a democratic, peaceful, and orderly transition.

In response to reports of violence against protesters that wasn’t necessary, the EU emphasized the importance of the right to peaceful assembly and association and condemned the use of force against peaceful protesters that wasn’t necessary.
