Following the arrest of Hirunika, police use tear gas to disrupt the demonstrators. Today, a number of demonstrators gathered close to the President’s official house in Fort, Colombo, and the police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse them.

Following the arrest of a group led by former MP Hirunika Premachandra for organizing a peaceful protest in front of the President’s official home, a number of people had gathered beside the Police barricades erected on Chatham Street.

Rehan Jayawickreme, Vice Chairman of the SJB youth wing, Hirunika Premachandra, and a number of other women and men organized a protest to voice their outrage at the difficulties that the general people is experiencing as a result of the economic crisis.

After being taken into custody, they were put aboard a bus and driven under police protection to an undisclosed destination.

After that, the public had congregated close to Chatham Street, which leads to the President’s official residence, but the police attacked them with tear gas and water cannons.

Although there have been attacks, people are still congregated there yelling anti-government and anti-Presidential chants.
