Gotabaya departs on a special Saudi Airlines flight for Singapore – Maldives Media.

Maldivian media reported that Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa left the Maldives for Singapore shortly ago.

According to the reports, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is taking a Saudi Airlines flight to Singapore (SV788).

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives yesterday morning after public demonstrations demanding his resignation over the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

Following a massive public uprising on July 9, the President announced that he will resign from office on July 13.

Despite numerous assurances to the Speaker of Sri Lanka’s Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena that he would tender his resignation, he fled to the Maldives early on July 13.

Instead, Gotabaya Rajapaksa appointed Ranil Wickremesinghe as acting president and informed the Speaker that he will submit his resignation upon his arrival in Singapore, where he has reportedly claimed asylum.

Even though the Sri Lankan President was scheduled to depart for Singapore last night, he allegedly refused to board the plane due to security concerns and instead requested a private aircraft to travel there.

The President has reportedly left the Maldives on a Saudi Airlines flight (SV788) bound for Singapore, as reported by the Maldivian media.

Authorities and public activists in Sri Lanka are awaiting the official resignation of the President in order to determine the country’s future course of action.
