Published:

The Department of Wildlife Conservation deployed two teams yesterday to track down the wild elephant involved in the accident at Moragoda in Thalawa that seriously injured veteran artiste Jackson Anthony and two others.

According to a senior official with the Wildlife Conservation Department in Anuradhapura, the jumbo had fallen twice on the double cab in the impact and would have suffered serious injuries.

He stated that two teams comprised of officers from the Wildlife Conservation offices in Thalawa and Anuradhapura were now searching for it in the Ulukkulama and Weerawewa areas.

Meanwhile, Dr. Chandana Jayasinghe, Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon in Anuradhapura Zone, stated that the image circulated on social media as the wild elephant involved in the accident was false and that wildlife conservators had not been able to locate it by yesterday afternoon. He claimed that a lack of fuel for departmental vehicles was impeding the search.
