The President fled to the Maldives this morning and is reportedly staying at a resort on one of the country’s islands.

Despite having previously stated that he would announce his resignation today, as demanded by Sri Lankans, the President has instead fled the country.

Following news of his arrival in the Maldives, Sri Lankans in the Maldives staged a protest in Male, demanding that Gotabaya Rajapaksa be deported to Sri Lanka.

Several Maldivians too have expressed their solidarity with the citizens of Sri Lanka on social media, calling on fellow Maldivians to join the protests by Sri Lankans in the Maldives against the arrival of Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
