On July 1, 2022, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Foreign Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris met with UN Resident Coordinator Hanna Singer-Hamdy.
During the conversation, Minister Peiris gave the Resident Coordinator a briefing on the country’s current position, paying particular attention to the shortage of food, gasoline, and medicine.
He conveyed his sincere gratitude to the bilateral and multilateral donors for their humanitarian aid.
The resident coordinator described the state of the UN and its agencies’ humanitarian assistance at the moment. She said that in addition to other existing assistance initiatives, the UN is providing Sri Lanka with urea for the Maha season, medications, seeds, and a school meal program.
The Government is currently formulating a new budget, taking into account the steps offered by the IMF to restore Sri Lanka’s ability to service its debt, according to Minister Peiris, who also provided further details on the IMF negotiations’ progress.
