Nominations for the presidency will be finalized on the 19th of July.

Tomorrow (July 16), the vacancy in the country’s presidency will be announced in parliament, according to Secretary-General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake.

In accordance with Article 04 of the Presidential Elections (Special Provisions) Act, all Members of Parliament have been notified of the 10 a.m. parliamentary session that is scheduled to convene (No. 2 of 1981).

According to the terms of this Act, the legislature must be convened within three days of the departure of the head of state.

During a special meeting of political party leaders and members of the Parliamentary Business Committee held this morning, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced that the parliament will elect a new president on July 20, as previously determined.

In accordance with this, nominations will be called for on Tuesday the following week (July 19). Following the House’s vote, a member of the legislature will be appointed to the presidency.
