Opposition’s concerns on the 22nd Amendment. Regarding the draft 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, the Opposition has three main objections, particularly in relation to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s authority.

The three main objections voiced by the opposition to the Draft 22nd Amendment to the Constitution are listed below.

The ability to remove the Prime Minister will still lie with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The President’s authority to nominate Cabinet Ministers and designate the subjects and responsibilities of Ministers will be constrained commencing with the next Parliament.

To make sure that the Government will hold a majority on the Constitutional Council (CC), the makeup of the body has been changed.
