During special operations conducted on Monday in the beach areas of Thewampiddi and Sand Banks in Mannar, the Sri Lanka Navy seized over 225kg of Kerala cannabis (11). The operations also resulted in the arrest of a suspect in relation to one of the incidents.
The North Central Naval Command’s SLNS Buwaneka had searched a suspicious dinghy that had arrived at Thewampiddi Beach. The search of the dinghy resulted in the seizure of approximately 203kg of Kerala cannabis in 99 packages hidden in a fishing net. Along with the shipment, the Navy apprehended one suspect and the dinghy used to smuggle drugs.
Meanwhile, during a patrol at Mannar Sand Banks, a group of SLN Marines attached to SLNS Thammanna in the North Central Naval Command recovered 05 packages of Kerala cannabis, weighing approximately 22kg and 140g (wet weight).
The estimated street value of seized Kerala cannabis is more than Rs. 67 million.
The suspect, a 45-year-old resident of Thewampiddi, was apprehended by the Navy with Kerala cannabis in the Mulankavil area. The suspect, as well as Kerala cannabis and the dinghy, will be turned over to Illuppukadawai Police for further legal action.
Kerala cannabis at Sand Banks is being held in naval custody until it can be produced for further legal proceedings.
