Sri Lankan party leaders have agreed to convene parliament on July 15th, two days after the President resigns.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Dinesh Gunawardena, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Kumar Welgama, and Dilan Perera are among the party leaders. Tiran Alles, Dullas Alahapperuma, Mano Ganesan, Lakshaman Kiriella, Rishad Bathiudeen, Udaya Gammanpila, and a number of other MPs were present at the crucial meeting on Monday (11).

MP Rauff Hakeem told reporters that nominations for the position of President will be accepted on July 19th, followed by an election on July 20th.

According to Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem, who spoke to reporters after the meeting, Ranil Wickremesinghe made another attempt to obtain the approval of party leaders to make fuel purchases.

He stated that the party leaders were opposed to moving such a proposal and that the decision would be made by the Cabinet of Ministers, not the Party Leaders.

Rauf Hakeem stated that he will NOT accept Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister and that Wickremesinghe is attempting to shift blame to the Party Leaders by proposing at the meeting to make fuel purchases in the absence of a valid document.

“Words were exchanged at the meeting,” said Rauff Hakeem adding that the objective is to form an all-party government, with a large number of ruling party MPs.

He was questioned by the President for not informing the Speaker of his decision to resign in writing rather than by phone.

Rauff Hakeem stated that both the President and the Prime Minister must resign in writing.
