Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Speaker of Parliament, told Indian news agency ANI yesterday (11) that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is still in Sri Lanka, just hours after telling BBC’s Global News podcast that the President had left the country.

Abeywardena told the BBC that the President was in a nearby country and would return to the island on Wednesday (13).

However, Speaker Abeywardena subsequently told ANI over a telephone call: “President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa is still in the country, I made a mistake in the (BBC) interview.”

When asked further about the whereabouts of the Sri Lankan President, the Speaker said that he is still in the country, according to ANI.
