Raids on the assistant of West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee resulted in the seizure of ₹ 20 crores in cash.

New Delhi’s Enforcement Directorate found 20 crores in cash at the home of a friend of West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee. The ED went to Arpita Mukerjee’s house because they think she was involved in a scam in West Bengal involving hiring teachers.

In a statement, the agency in charge of the investigation said, “The said amount is thought to be the result of criminal activity related to the said SSC scam.”

The bank employees are helping the search teams count the money using counting machines.

More than 20 mobile phones have also been found on Arpita Mukherjee’s property. Their purpose and use are still being figured out.

Aside from Chatterjee, the ED also searched the homes of Minister of State for Education Paresh C. Adhikary, MLA Manik Bhattacharya, and others.

Partha Chatterjee, who is now the minister for industries and commerce, was the education minister when West Bengal School Service Commission allegedly made illegal appointments in government-run and aided schools (WBSSC).

The ruling Trinamool Congress said that the raids were an attempt by the BJP government at the Centre to “harass” its political opponents.

The West Bengal Transport Minister, Firhad Hakim, said that the ED’s raid, which happened a day after the big Martyrs’ Day rally that made waves all over the country, was just an attempt to harass and scare the TMC’s leaders.

The BJP, on the other hand, said that since taking power, the Trinamool has “aided large-scale irregularities” in the way teachers at the primary, upper primary, and secondary levels are hired.
