Sri Lanka Railways has announced that ticket prices will increase this month.
Dhammika Jayasundara, General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways, stated that ticket prices will rise to 40% of the bus fare this month, as approved by the Cabinet.
He stated that increasing ticket prices is expected to reduce the Sri Lanka Railways’ loss by Rs. 6 billion.
According to Jayasundara, the train ticket price is currently about 20% higher than the bus fare.
According to the General Manager, the railway department loses around Rs. 30 million per day as a result of the current ticket charges.
He said that Sri Lanka Railways spends Rs. 45 million on fuel daily, however, only generates a daily revenue of approximately Rs. 15 million.
