Ranil not yet Acting President: No Urgent Situation

The office of Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has clarified its earlier statement regarding the imposition of a state of emergency.

Dinouk Colombage, the Prime Minister’s spokesman, told NewsWire that Ranil Wickremesinghe will declare an emergency “when he becomes acting president.”

Earlier, it was reported that the Prime Minister’s Office had issued a statement declaring that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has declared islandwide emergency law in his capacity as acting president.

The statement, which was published by several media outlets, also stated that the Prime Minister, in his capacity as acting president, has ordered the security forces to implement an immediate curfew in the Western Province.
