Ranil will take office as acting president today. Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to take the Oath of Office as Acting President today (July 15), following the official confirmation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s retirement from the office.
In the meantime, the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore reported last night that a letter of resignation from President Rajapaksa had been received.
However, after confirming the letter’s validity and concluding all legal formalities, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena would issue a formal statement in this regard later today.
The Head of State may retire in accordance with Article 38 of the Constitution by delivering a letter of resignation signed by him to the Speaker of Parliament.
After the besieged President arrived in Singapore from the Maldives yesterday on a Saudi Airlines trip, he immediately sent his letter of resignation.
President Rajapaksa had neither requested nor been given asylum in Singapore, according to the Singapore Foreign Ministry, at the time of his arrival.
