SL situation: UN Chief’s Message

Published:

António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, has expressed concern over the current political turmoil in Sri Lanka.

In a tweet, António Guterres stated that he continues to closely monitor the situation in Sri Lanka.

“It is essential that the conflict’s root causes and protesters’ grievances be addressed,” he said.

Guterres urged all party leaders to embrace the spirit of compromise in order to achieve a democratic and peaceful transition.

His message follows two public uprisings in Sri Lanka that demanded the resignations of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe within five days.

Due to the hardships brought about by the country’s economic crisis, the citizens are calling for their resignation.
