Sri Lanka cricket legend Roshan Mahanama has urged citizens to participate in Saturday’s large-scale public anti-government demonstration.
“I would like to request all Sri Lankans, irrespective of their ethnic and religious divisions to join the non-violent protests planned for the 9th of July for the sake of our own survival and for the sake of the future generations,” he Tweeted.
According to Mahanama, this is the first national cause since 1948 in which the nation has come together as one, and it may be the last chance to change a corrupt political system. “I have lived 2/3 of my life and I want to leave a better place for the younger generation. Hence, I will be joining the protests myself,” the cricketer said.
Roshan Mahanama also made a humble request from all joining the protests to engage the demonstration in a peaceful manner.
“However, I would like to humbly request all involved to ensure that we are disciplined and maintain the protests in a non-violent manner. Let us unite for change and a better future!” he added.
Meanwhile, Former Captain Sanath Jayasuriya demanded President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resign immediately.
“We are one of the oldest democracies in Asia. You swore an oath to protect the people of this country not yourself. Do not test the people of this country again as I said before you are sitting on a powder keg playing with fire! Go Home Gota now” Jayasuriya said.
