The PM’s office claims the President formally informed the PM of his resignation. According to the PM’s Media Unit, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has officially told Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he will step down from the presidency as previously reported.

A big group of irate protestors stormed the presidential palace on Saturday, just hours before President Rajapaksa announced his retirement.

In order to facilitate the formation of a unity administration, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe summoned a meeting with political leaders.

The party leaders agreed, under the Speaker’s leadership, that the President and Prime Minister must step down right away.

The President has informed the Speaker that he will step down from office on July 13 to allow for a smooth transfer of authority.
