According to Bloomberg, Johnny Depp is making a comeback as an actor in the French historical drama “La Favorite” after grabbing headlines last month when he defeated his ex-wife Amber Heard in a defamation suit. Depp will take on the role of King Louis XV, who ruled the nation from 1715 to 1774.
15 months after its theatrical debut, Netflix has purchased the rights to stream “La Favorite” in France. According to a Bloomberg story, the streamer is not authorized to broadcast the movie outside of France. The nation will see the release of the Maiwenn Le Besco-directed film in 2023.
In the multi-billion dollar grossing fantasy adventure “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise, Depp was previously rumored to return as Jack Sparrow. According to reports, the franchise’s creator, Disney, had also apologized to the actor and had made the actor a $301 million comeback offer.
However, a spokesman for the actor later refuted the rumor in an interview with NBC News. They declared, “This is a lie.”
Depp’s return to the big screen will probably spark debate. Heard accused him of torturing her both physically and mentally while they were together. Heard and Depp first became acquainted in 2009 while performing opposite roles in “The Rum Diary.” They wed in 2015 after a four-year relationship.
The next year, Heard sought a divorce from Depp and secured a restraining order against him. Depp filed a libel lawsuit against News Group Newspapers in 2018 after the company’s newspaper The Sun referred to him as a “wife-beater.” When the judge determined that Heard’s claims were “substantially true,” Depp ultimately lost the case.
