Threats to MPs posed by social media during voting have prompted an investigation.

Published:

Acting President Ranil Wickramasinghe has ordered an investigation into those who are using social media to exert pressure on members of parliament in relation to their vote in the upcoming election for the next president.

The acting President has issued this directive to the security forces in response to MPs’ concerns that they are unable to vote freely as a result of threats emanating from social media.

Accordingly, Ranil Wickramasinghe has requested an investigation under the parliamentary privileges act and associated criminal statutes.

In addition, he asserted that Members of Parliament should be able to travel freely to and from the Parliament and that any obstruction constitutes an attack on their parliamentary privileges.
