According to Dayasiri Jayasekara, general secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), three names have been mentioned as potential successors for the remaining two years of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s term.
“The SLPP’s Dullas Alahapperuma will be nominated by the other factions, and opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has already revealed his name. Therefore, in this case, one of them will be chosen by Parliament, he remarked during a television debate.
However, MP Jayasekara stated that he is unsure if any of these contenders can secure the backing of the “GotaGoGama” activists to move the nation forward.
If they reject both candidates, he said, they will have to consider their options moving forward.
The following alternative is for Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to temporarily assume the role of President and appoint a Prime Minister to lead the nation. I believe JVP is in favor of this action,” he added.
Additionally, MP Jayasekara stated, “We need to include the JVP in the all-party administration that will be established, or else we will have to deal with the same protests.”
