The Department of Railways said today that the higher train fares will go into effect at midnight on July 22.
In June, the Cabinet agreed to a plan to raise train fares and other charges related to trains.
The government said that the increase in fuel prices has made the Sri Lanka Railway Department lose even more money, making it unable to give good service.
So, in July, it was decided that the lowest price for a third-class ticket would go up to Rs. 20.
