Published:

Under strict security, the Presidential Secretariat reopens. After being retaken from anti-government demonstrators who had held the structure since July 9th, the President’s Office in Colombo has resumed operations.

Following a mass movement demanding the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the populace occupied the Presidential Secretariat after which it was available for public viewing.

However, during a special operation early on Friday 22nd July 2022, the Police and the tri-forces drove the demonstrators out of the area. A number of demonstrators, including journalists, were beaten and hurt during the confrontation.

Today, the Presidential Secretariat began operations after being taken over by the state, with all of its employees reporting for duty.
