Published:

A woman in labor was discovered on the grounds this morning by Sri Lanka Army officers stationed at the Department of Immigration and Emigration. They took quick action to admit the woman to the hospital.

The woman gave birth to a girl, and according to a representative for the Castle Street Hospital for Women, both mother and child are doing well.

I arrived from Ambalangoda and waited in line at six o’clock. I was sitting next to a pregnant woman. She gave birth after that. A witness to the incident stated that there was no ambulance stationed there, not even for an emergency.

The 26-year-old mother who gave birth this morning had spent the previous two days waiting in line to get a passport.

Today, a sizable crowd of people could be seen lining up at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in an effort to obtain a passport.
