After a hiatus of two years, direct flights between Chennai, India, and Jaffna, Sri Lanka, have resumed, according to Harin Fernando, India’s minister of tourism.

Yesterday, the first Alliance Air direct passenger flight from Chennai touched down at the Palaly Airport in Jaffna.

Minister Harin Fernando told NewsWire that before this, it was difficult for people in the North to go to India. After spending more than eight hours on the road to get to Colombo, they had to spend almost Rs. 90,000 to fly to India, which takes an additional two hours.

But he added that the restart of passenger flights between Chennai and India will help in a number of ways to shorten the distances that people in the North must traverse.

Highlighting that this will also help enhance the tourism business, he further added that plans are afoot to work on the Ramayana Trail and introduce domestic flight operations between Palaly, Jaffna and the Ratmalana airport in Colombo as well.

The tourism minister stated that talks with Alliance Express India about starting flights between Jaffna and Ratmalana are in progress. He also mentioned that discussions about expanding the flight operations included Vineet Sood, Amresh Choudary, and Mannu Anand, the marketing manager for Alliance Air.

Minister Harin Fernando continued, “Duty-free operations will also start in the next three weeks at the Palaly Airport in Jaffna.”

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs’ assistance in operating direct passenger flights between Chennai and Jaffna was also acknowledged by Sri Lanka’s tourism minister.
