In a sad event, an Iranian bride died at her own wedding after being shot by a stray bullet during a round of celebratory gunfire.

According to the New York Post, the bride, who was identified as 24-year-old Mahvash Leghaei, was toasting her marriage after the ceremony when a guest decided to mark the occasion by firing off some ceremonial gunshots, which is against the law in Iran.

Things went horribly wrong when a stray bullet went through Ms. Leghaei’s head and hurt two male attendees.

The 24-year-old was rushed to the hospital, but she later died from her wounds. The other two victims survived with only minor injuries.

“We got an emergency call about a shooting at a wedding hall in Firuzabad city, and officers were sent out right away,” a police spokesperson, Colonel Mehdi Jokar, told the outlet.

The shooter was a 36-year-old man who was the cousin of the groom. They said that the shooter had “bad control of the weapon.” Police officials also said that the man had left the scene with the weapon, an unlicensed hunting rifle, but was caught soon after.

“Naturally, any disturbance of public order like this crosses the red line with the police,” said Mr. Jokar. “People need to know that shooting at weddings is illegal to make the community safe, and we will take tough action against anyone who breaks this rule.”

The Post said that Mahvash Leghaei was a recent psychology graduate. She had also worked as a social worker who helped drug addicts beat their addictions. Following her wishes, her family has since given three people her organs.
