The public has been warned by the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) to be on the lookout for fraudulent efforts to obtain personal information using phony applications.

The ongoing fuel crisis in the nation has reportedly led to complaints of cases involving the theft of personal information using bogus links, according to a statement from the CERT.

In order to steal your sensitive personal information (such as mobile phone numbers, vehicle registration numbers, and identity card numbers) during the phony registration process, thieves ask you to register for a token to obtain fuel.

The CERT issued a warning, predicting that the stolen data would be used for nefarious purposes, including in certain cases, the creation of phony social media identities.

As a result, the CERT has warned the general public to be wary of receiving such fraudulent emails.
