21 arrested for blocking gates to President’s Office

On Monday (20), Sri Lanka Police arrested 21 people for protesting near the President’s Office in Colombo.

Sri Lanka Police arrested one monk, four women, and 16 men.

According to a Sri Lanka Police statement, on Sunday (19) night, a group of protestors obstructed the two gates leading to the President’s Office from Lotus Road, and then obstructed the two gates leading to the Finance Ministry and the Treasury as well.

It was also stated that protestors erected tents at these gates, preventing public employees reporting for essential services at the respective offices from entering or exiting the premises.

According to the Sri Lanka Police, the protest also caused inconvenience to the general public.

According to Sri Lanka Police, the protest also caused a 30-minute delay in the Finance Secretary’s meeting with the International Monetary Fund.

As a result, the Sri Lanka Police and the Special Task Force decided to detain the protestors.

According to Sri Lanka Police, the suspects will appear in court on Monday (20) for legal action.
